Today’s post is an exchange I had with “them” a little over a year ago. They are referring to the orchid plants at my home and the way I “care” for them by ignoring them completely.

You are growing in spite of yourself, just like the orchids. The orchids have been your test—leave them alone—do not prune, do not fuss. Give them the essential bit of water when necessary, keep them from the direct sunlight—but leave them alone. And although they may not always look tidy, when they blossom they are just as beautiful as the rest. And they have blossomed, survived on their own without interference or manipulation. They survive. That is the lesson of the orchid. You will bloom in spite of yourself.
